Herbert began his career as a management consultant at Coopers & Lybrand in Lagos, eventually becoming a chartered accountant. His journey continued at Capital Bank and later GTBank, where he rose to the position of executive director in institutional banking. In 2002, alongside his business partner Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, he acquired a stake in Access Bank, propelling it from a modest bank to one of Nigeria’s top five, with a global presence.

Under Herbert’s leadership, Access Bank flourished, boasting over 6.5 million account-holders and operating through 350 branches and 1,500 ATMs across Nigeria, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the UK. He chaired various institutions, including Access Bank (UK) Limited, and served on boards like the Nigerian Mortgage Refinance Company.

Legacy and Social Impact:

Beyond his banking success, Herbert Wigwe was a man of influence. In 2016, he established The HOW Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to social impact initiatives. He actively participated as a speaker on various global platforms, including engagements in Silicon Valley and the Financial Times summit in Mozambique.
